VA Burial Benefits
Understanding What the VA Provides
VA burial benefits help cover funeral, burial, and transportation costs for eligible veterans. Our staff assists families in filing all necessary claims at no additional charge.
Who Qualifies
Veterans with an honorable or general discharge, service members who died on active duty, and in many cases their spouses and minor dependent children. Unmarried adult dependent children may qualify in certain circumstances.
What’s Covered at National Cemeteries
Burial space for veteran, spouse, and dependent child; opening and closing of the grave; outer burial container or vault; and a government-furnished headstone or grave marker, at no charge to the family.
Burial Allowance
For veterans buried outside a national cemetery, the VA provides a burial allowance to offset funeral costs. Non-service-connected claims must be filed within two years of burial or cremation. There is no time limit for service-connected claims.
Military Funeral Honors
Coordinated by the Department of Defense, military honors include the playing of “Taps,” flag folding and presentation, a rifle detail, and a color guard. Our staff requests these honors on behalf of the family and ensures proper documentation is in order.
Headstones & Grave Markers
The VA provides a headstone or marker for eligible veterans, including for previously unmarked graves, at no charge. To request one, complete VA Form 10-1330 and submit to the National Cemetery Scheduling Office.
Required Documentation
The DD-214 (discharge papers) is the primary document required for most VA burial benefits and national cemetery burial. If the DD-214 is lost, we can assist families in obtaining a replacement through the National Archives or local veterans service organizations in Anderson County.
For complete VA benefits information, visit va.gov/burials-memorials or call the VA at 1-800-827-1000.
Common Questions
Veterans Funeral Services in Oak Ridge — FAQ
Can Companion Oak Ridge coordinate burial at the East Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery in Knoxville?
Yes. We handle all scheduling, documentation, and military honors coordination for burial at the East Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery and other area cemeteries. Our staff contacts the cemetery directly once the family confirms their choice.
Is Knoxville National Cemetery still accepting new burials from Oak Ridge veterans?
Knoxville National Cemetery is currently accepting cremated remains in new in-ground gravesites and columbarium niches. New casketed burials are limited to subsequent interments in existing occupied gravesites. For full casketed burial, the East Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery in Knoxville or Mountain Home National Cemetery in Johnson City are the most accessible, fully open options. Cemetery availability can change; our staff verifies current status at the time of arrangement.
What if the veteran’s DD-214 is lost or unavailable?
We can assist families in requesting a replacement DD-214 through the National Archives (Standard Form 180) or the Tennessee Department of Veterans Services. This process can take time, so we recommend starting as early as possible. Our staff will guide you through each step.
Does Companion charge extra for VA paperwork and benefits coordination?
No. VA benefits assistance, burial allowance claim coordination, and military honors requests are included as part of our veteran package services at no additional charge.
Can the veteran packages be used at a private cemetery in Anderson County?
Yes. The packages can be customized for burial at a private cemetery, but additional cemetery costs — plot, opening and closing, outer burial container — will apply and are not included in the package price. VA benefits may still apply depending on the veteran’s eligibility and cause of death.
How soon can Companion Oak Ridge respond after a death?
Our team is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We can begin the arrangement process at any time. Transfer within 30 miles of our Oak Ridge location at 653 Briarcliff Avenue is included in our standard transfer fee; beyond 30 miles is billed at $2.50 per mile one way.
